FAQs

Do I have to be artistic?

Not unless you want to.  You can use normal writing, or be more decorative if you prefer.  The important thing is to make sure your writing is legible, and make each letter at least 0.5m high, so that it is visible from above.  The sticks we provide have blunt ends so that the lines are not too thin, again to ensure visibility from a distance.

Can children join?

Of course!  If we get a reasonable number of young poets, we will have a separate prize for best poem in the junior category.

What happens if it rains?

We have a back up plan of relocating to the Orewa Library if the weather is bad, where we will have an open mic in which you can read your poem, and prizes will be awarded as planned.  However, we will try to continue with the plan if there is just the odd shower, so bring along your raincoat and umbrella.  Check the event web site on the morning of the event for an update.

Can I get drinks/refreshments at the event?

Yes.  There are a number of cafes nearby.

Where can I park?

New World is nearby, and an adjoining parking area that can be used for non-customers, as well as on-street parking around Orewa.

What happens if I find it too difficult to write my poem in the sand due to physical disability etc?

The registration form has an option to allow you to specify if this is the case, and we will endeavour to have someone available to help you on the day.  If this is not possible, we will contact you before hand to discuss options.
